Auckland Town Hall

    Completion date
    Cultural & Civic

This project involved the major conservation and restoration of the 1911 Auckland Town Hall heritage spaces and building fabric. Restraint was imperative in the respectful preservation of this publically treasured heritage building, undertaken in a joint venture with City Design and Smythe Grant.

Retaining the original Edwardian elegance of this landmark building, public spaces have been renovated to create light, open and airy reception areas.

Some spaces demanded a more radical reinvigoration. For example, three great chambers, originally a cart dock within the building, provided promising opportunity to create a new and surprising entry point from Aotea Square.

Adaptive reuse of lesser heritage and service spaces provided the necessary amenities expected of a contemporary first class performance venue.

The building was upgraded to meet today’s audience expectations and safety requirements through the installation of four new lifts, modern seating, acoustic enhancement, sound proofing and air-conditioning.

This historic building has re-entered the city’s vocabulary enabling Auckland City’s population to engage in local history delivered with contemporary relevance.
