Sharing the water’s edge with the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum, The Crew Club is a vibrant, new hospitality precinct. With just a rail between patrons and the sea, a rarity in Auckland’s CBD, the brief asked for a range of spaces, which would accommodate and appeal to a wide range of guests; from a relaxed gastro bar and outdoor terraced area, to a ‘high-energy’ dining and bar area within.

Understanding the local and historical context of the building, the bar's design needed to exercise contemporary thematic maritime cues to create a welcoming and fun environment, for service day and night. Drawing inspiration from the historic Launchman’s building fronting the premises, the design aesthetic takes cues from references to Auckland’s waterfront past and the Maritime Museum’s tall ships moored in the harbour.

The existing external deck has been transformed into a tiered grandstand, a retractable roof providing access to this informal seating year-round. Improved sight-lines provide unimpeded views to the sea, whether patrons are seated in the veranda, conservatory or lounge dining areas. The island bar, created to anchor the heart of the expanded premises, mirrors the open kitchen server and creates theatre in the leaner dining area.

Improving sightlines and accessibility to the water’s edge was a key priority for this project, as such the insertion of a bi-fold door and windows provides a fully opening frontage overlooking the grandstand. The Crew Club’s interior uses riveted steel plates, galvanised light industrial suspended shelving and herring bone floor-tiles to reference its rich connection with Maritime history.

A contemporary colour palette is combined with tongue and groove panelling, exposed timber soffits and white-washed solid timber flooring to create a warm and authentic beach-house dining experience.

The Crew Club’s terraced grandstand is fitted with a retractable awning, enabling public access to the all-weather external deck year-round. This informal seating area is designed with fixing-points for lightweight tray tables, which can be inserted as required, creating a flexible and highly functional seating area, which can adapt to the groups that inhabit the space.
