The Faculty of Engineering Innovation Centre is the first development on the University of Auckland’s Newmarket campus; the newest addition to its integrated campus cluster, adjoining the City and Grafton campuses across Auckland. Expansion to this site supports long term growth, and enables the University to deliver the full benefits of a multi-disciplinary research university to New Zealand.

Situated in the heart of Newmarket, the former Lion Breweries site has undergone a significant transformation. Four existing brewing and bottling warehouses (Buildings 901-904) have been repurposed to accommodate large scale engineering research facilities.

The refurbishment of these existing structures was an economic prospect that affords an adaptability capable of accommodating diverse research streams, from health technologies and manufacturing and materials, to novel technologies and sustainable energy systems.

A number of the most robust original warehouse structures, former bottling and brewing facilities, were capable of supporting adaptive reuse with new mezzanine insertions, to meet the specialist Faculty requirements. Referencing the site’s industrial heritage, the buildings have been re-wrapped in their original cladding.

The newly constructed Civil Engineering Test Facility, Building 906, houses a structure test hall - a nine-metre structure capable of earthquake testing buildings up to three storeys - thought to be the largest in Australasia, with adjacent four-storey workshop and office building. Building 906’s simple offset form and unitised glazed façade, provides a visual transparency to the campus activities, and also engages with the surroundings, creating a window into this engineering innovation precinct.

One of the key drivers internally was to create layered views through spaces, so that deep labs and internal rooms still had views and light borrowed from external windows. The extensive use of internal glazing also reinforces the nature of these labs as spaces of research but also for learning and discovery. The visibility exposes potential students to some of the workings of the labs and places the equipment on display. Manifestation is used where light is essential but commercial sensitivity requires privacy.

A complement of highly specialised research labs, flexible co-discipline shared laboratories and social spaces, this integrated research hub provides the catalyst for increased collaboration and expansion of the Engineering Faculty’s research capabilities and paves the way for a comprehensive redevelopment of the City Campus facilities.
